Mount Kilimanjaro climbing, Trekking and Hiking

Mount Kenya is Africa’s second highest mountain at 5,199m (17,058 feet) and the highest of all Kenya Mountains. Mount Kenya is roughly circular, about 60km across at the 200mm contour, where the steep font hills rise out of the gentler slopes of the centered highlands. At the centre of the massif, the main peaks rise sharply from around 4,500m to the main summit of Batian 5,199m, Nelion 5,188m and point Lenana 4,985m. Other major summits on the mountain include Point Piggott 4,957m, Point Dutton 4,885 and Point John 4,883m. Of the three main peaks (Batian, Lenana and Nelion), only point Lenana can be reached by trekkers and the other two being only for technical climbers.

Kenya enjoys an equatorial climate with average annual temperatures of about 26oC and diurnal temperatures of about 30C. There are two rainy seasons on the mountain from April-June and October-December. The mountain is an important water catchment’s area and many rivers such as the Naro Moru emerge from the melting glaciers.

The mountain is located 180 kilometers north of Nairobi and it can often be seen from as far as Nairobi. It is an extinct volcano, which formed a couple of million years ago. The mountain is located in the Mount Kenya National Park, which is a designated protected area around the mountain above 3200m altitude. The Kenya Wildlife Service manages the park. The national park covers an area of 700 square kilometers and was established in 1949. Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing, Trekking and Hiking
Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, located in Northeast Tanzania, near the Kenya border. Kilimanjaro is an extinct volcano, and is one of the most massive in the world. It towers 15,000 feet above the surrounding arid plains, and 2.5 square miles of its surface are over 18,500 feet. Beneath its ice dome, snow extends down long gullies that have been eroded in the mountain sides. The highest point on Kilimanjaro is Uhuru Peak, on the volcano Kibo 5,895 metres (19,341 ft).The highest point on Kibo's steep rim is Uhuru, the highest peak in Africa. Nestled in the center of Kibo is a smaller crater, 600-feet deep in sulfurous ashes, As the highest point in Africa Uhuru Peak is one of the seven summits.The summit was first reached by the Marangu army scout Two other peaks are also dormant volcanoes: Mawenzi (5,149 m, 16,890 ft), the third highest peak of mount Kilimanjaro in Africa and Shira (3,962 m, 13,000 ft).Due to Kilimanjaro equatorial location and high elevation, almost every all climate type on globe is represented, including a year-round snow-topped summit. Mawenzi is an older cone, jagged from erosion, with sheer faces on all sides.

Despite its lower elevation, Mawenzi is the more difficult climb, and no approach is possible without rock climbing and/or snow and ice climbing skills. Mawenzi is the third highest peak in Africa. Mount Kenya (17,057 ft.) is second. The approach and climb provides spectacular diversity, from scrub-lands thick with African wildlife to lush forests to flowering alpine tundra. All this finally gives way to snow and rock above 15,000 feet. Kilimanjaro summit crater, known as Kibo, measures an incredible 1.5 miles across. . Mawenzi is the third highest peak in Africa. The approach and climb provides spectacular diversity, from scrub-lands thick with African wildlife to lush forests to flowering alpine tundra. All this finally gives way to snow and rock above 15,000 feet.

The Mombasa Highway runs adjacent to the airport, and is the main route of access between Nairobi and the airport. Most of the international airlines fly into Jomo Kenyatta international airport.
